UniLab’s journey began in 2006 with the development of the AC Laboratory System (ACLS) for the Electron Microscope Unit at UNSW Sydney. Led by Dong Zheng and his team, ACLS was created to help research facilities streamline equipment booking, laboratory operations, user management, maintenance and reporting—allowing researchers and facility teams to focus on what matters most: enabling high-quality research.

By 2015, ACLS had expanded beyond UNSW, supporting research institutions across Australia and internationally. As adoption continued to grow, UniLab Pty Ltd was established in 2016 as a dedicated technology company to further develop, support and scale ACLS and related research infrastructure solutions.

Following its first external investment in 2018, UniLab broadened its product portfolio with Moxy, a suite of smart laboratory access, usage tracking and collaboration solutions designed around the practical needs of research facilities and scientific teams.

Today, UniLab provides an expanding ecosystem of digital solutions for laboratory and research infrastructure management, including facility and equipment management, booking and access control, operational reporting, business intelligence, procurement workflows and research impact solutions.

Built on nearly two decades of experience working alongside research facilities, UniLab continues to evolve its technologies to meet the complex operational, security and compliance requirements of modern research environments.
